Terrestrial Mammals
Terrestrial animals visit the tide pools at Haystack Rock and the greater Cannon Beach area regularly. At certain times of year the beach attracts species that typically reside farther inland. Elk might bring their young to forage on the hillside east of Haystack or near the estuary. Raccoons might head to the rock at night looking for eggs to eat. Cougar and mountain beaver have also been seen searching for food around Haystack Rock. Beaver may also be in or near estuaries in the area. Make sure to give these wild animals space to move freely as they can be dangerous to humans if they feel threatened. The most frequent terrestrial mammals at Haystack Rock are dogs and humans (yes, you)! When visiting Haystack Rock, please remember that your pet is an extension of you and must follow all of the same rules: no harassing wildlife (including chasing birds), stay in the sand and out of protected areas, and keep pets on a leash.
