Bivalves
Bivalves are a class of animals that have two shells attached by a hinge. There are a large number of species of bivalves including mussels, clams, and oysters that live across the world in both fresh and salt water. When exposed during low tide, mussels will close to protect themselves and help retain moisture. They might look like a rock, but when the tide comes in the shells will open and the animal within will begin filter feeding. The Oregon Coast is home to several popular edible species of bivalve. At nearby beaches, visitors with a shellfish permit can harvest mussels and clams - Haystack Rock, however, is a no collection zone.
